A cheap Home Depot refrigerator for off grid use?
In this video, we remove the 38 year old Propane fridge and replace it with a cheap 10.1 cuft 110 volt fridge. The results are surprising.
This fridge is only $329 at Home depot and we got it for $50 off since it was a display model and had some dings in it.
Here is the fridge if you're curious about it:

Both machines work as I expected. Now, I would like to find a machine like the former “Yazoo” blade (brush-hog) mower! Oh! The only issue I've had with the engine is the carburetor float being gummed up with crap fuel and, basically dumping fuel into the oil. Pretty easy fix. Just drain the oil and run it. The float will clear itself. Currently looking for a new belt. Gonna go to an auto parts store, so I can have a part number that people can get anywhere

    I replaced the propane fridge in my sons trailer with a fridge just like the one you have. Fit in the spot nice and tight. Getting the propane fridge out the door of the trailer was a PITA. I had to remove the trim from the fridge. That shit is glued on with some super strong glue. I have since sold that trailer. The trailer I live in, the propane fridge broke about a 6 months ago. I have not removed it yet but I do have a fridge that is way too big(double the size) to fit where the old was was. It takes up a bit of room but it sure is nice to have double the space in the fridge.

    • @WindwalkerHomestead
      @WindwalkerHomestead 3 месяца назад

      Thus one was a couple inches narrower, 2 inches deeper and about 10 inches taller. There was a drawer under where the old fridge was that I cut out to make the space tall enough. The surprising part about this fridge is that it does very well on our solar setup. The old fridge barely fit out the door. Scraping the door frame on the way out. I wish I had recorded more of the removal and actual installation

    I didn’t hear that part. I’m sorry. I have over 30 years experience building off grid solar systems and I live off grid and I know how to do a lot of incredible things with direct current and batteries and I love people that are into solar. If I could save you any trouble, I will definitely offer my advice. I have 11 kW of solar and 34 kWh of battery and I have like six charge controllers paralleled to my main direct current bus. • @MaritimeHomesteader
    @MaritimeHomesteader 4 месяца назад

    Hello I didn’t watch the entire video so maybe you addressed this but the charge controllers should have adequate ventilation available as they get warm when running and the fans will be starving for air if it’s a sealed box. Just a suggestion but I would cut some vents in on the underside and also on the back near the top. The small 2” diameter round vent covers would work. Two on underside and two on the back near the top.

    • @WindwalkerHomestead
      @WindwalkerHomestead 4 месяца назад

      Thank you. I do plan on cutting a hole in the box and putting in an air filter for the intake and a vent on top for the exhaust. Once the inverter and battery charger go in, there will be no way around it

  • @michaelchownyk5255
    @michaelchownyk5255 4 месяца назад

    Epever charge controllers are not supposed to be horizontal. They are supposed to be mounted vertically on the wall so that the heat can convict upwards. Also, your mounting location is far too small for that equipment. It will overheat for sure. Plus the breakers will start cooking.

    That EPEVER 80A is actually rated at 138V VOC. Its 150V at the "lowest temperature" you would experience. But solar panel labels are generally for nominal conditions so the 37V VOC on the solar panels x 4 = 148V, is too high. In cold temperatures the VOC of that solar string can easily exceed 150V. You will need to reconfigure the string a bit. I would consider paralleling two strings of 2 panels each. Buy a little solar combiner box to parallel the two strings together. I really like the little "Eco-worthy 4 string PV combiner" boxes. Check the fuse rating for the strings... I think that combiner box comes with 10A fuses, you might need 15A fuses with residential panels. But usually 10A is fine (per string). I don't recommend sitting the charge controller or batteries or anything else on the ground. Those are a bit too-exposed to the elements. Consider making a box for the equipment, with a solid lid, that won't let any water in that you can raise off the ground a bit. It's best to have a sealable box to reduce moisture issues but anything is better than sitting the equipment on the ground. Moisture can ruin the breakers, inverter, charge controller, etc. It won't last when exposed like that. -Matt

    • @WindwalkerHomestead
      @WindwalkerHomestead 4 месяца назад

      Thank you. I did read that part of the specs, but they can also handle 150% of the rated values. At most, the controller will limit the amount of power coming in. Ive already had that one hooked up all winter and its survived so far. They are also used panels, so they are only rated 75-80% of new. The second part of the video will be out soon, where I put it all in an electrical cabinet

      They are decent lights. I just had to do a return on mine and they gave me an updated one with 500 lumens. I've been checking it out for the past few weeks. Seems to have been updated a bit in design, too. Hopefully things are just getting better for it. I'm waiting till their website to update before I make a video about this one

    If I recall when I replaced mine,98, there was a smaller o ring as well that caused a leak resulting in doing the job twice. I remember when we changed our thermostats twice a year,winter and summer and it was a 15 minute job. Also consider checking ECT sensor. Engine coolant temperature sensor. That’s what my problem was to begin with. 5 different mechanics didn’t discover the problem because it didn’t show up on any code readers.

      Wow. That's really interesting. This one didn't have a second o ring. Did it have 2 sensors? I know some vehicles had a sensor that was for a Guage and another that was for the ecu. I just diagnosed one like that a few weeks ago

    How does the choke cable go in? This is my last step and I don't wanna fuck it up.

      I wish I could remember. If it wasn't buried so deep, I'd say just try it one way and if it doesn't to work, try a different way. It won't be that easy to fuck it up. I would think that at worst, you would have a backwards choke. I'd go ahead, hook it up how you think it goes, work the choke lever and see if the choke blade moves open and closed how it should. I wish I could help more

      @WindwalkerHomestead I got it installed, but it seems like the plunger doesn't seat the whole way in the carb. The original choke would stay open when the lever was pulled. This one opens and just retracts.. It runs fine after I adjusted the idle. I'm just gonna roll with it if there are no issues. Thanks for the reply.

      That is kinda weird. I'll have to pay attention when I do it again and do some better camera angles and such. Fir thus video, I just did a simple rebuild. It won't run again, so I'm just gonna replace it with a new one and redo a video. I'm glad you got it running

    Toro, sold by Amazon, has a Briggs engine and is about the same price. Rural King, Lowes, Tractor Supply and Troy Built all have string trimmers. I did videos on this trimmer @ T wagner RUclips with the Viper engine.

    Can you tell me the size of the sandpaper that fits into the sander? Iknow it's 1/3 sheet, but how many inches?

    • @WindwalkerHomestead
      @WindwalkerHomestead 8 месяцев назад

      It would be about 3 and 2/3 inches by 9 inches. The full sheet being 9x11. If they make a 4x9 sheet, or something close, that's what I'd use if buying purpose cut sheets
